En 9abc - Grammar

Now that you've written a couple of texts we're going to start looking in to how you can improve them even further, starting with improving your knowledge of grammar. When you know grammar you know how to talk about the language and that makes it easier for you to understand your mistakes and learn from them.

There are a couple of elements that most you need to become even more aware of:
  • relative pronouns
  • prepositions
  • verb tenses
  • adjectives and adverbs

9abc - Bowling for Columbine

USA vs. Sverige

gunAtt ha en skarpladdad pistol under huvudkudden eller en M16 på nattduksbordet ser många i filmen som en självklarhet. De hänvisar gärna till konstitutionen då de ifrågasätts av vapenmotståndare. ”From my cold dead hands!” är en favoritslogan Charlton Heston använder sig av (ungefär ”över min döda kropp”), liksom friheten att röra sig fritt inom deras ”land of the free, home of the brave” (de sista två raderna ur den amerikanska nationalsången). Fundera över hur han och likasinnade resonerar och försvarar sin rätt att bära vapen!



Diskutera hur USA skiljer sig från till exempel Sverige när det gäller vem som skall stå för medborgarnas beskydd och hur synen på individen och dess ansvar i grunden är olika. Upplever ni att denna attityd är på väg att förändras även i Sverige?


Media

Hur agerar medierna enligt Moore? Det finns sällan ett ordentligt researcharbete eller något intresse av fördjupning kring de fall man bevakar. Ingen brydde sig till exempel om att undersöka hur levnadsförhållandena såg ut för den sexårige pojke som sköt Kayla. Varför är man sällan intresserad av de bakomliggande orsakerna? Vad är god journalistik?

Fundera över vilka behov serier av typen Cops och Efterlyst fyller. Hur riskerar publikens världsbild att formas utifrån de bilder de ser? Fundera vidare över mediernas roll i skapandet av en befolknings paranoida inställning utifrån Moores resonemang. Hur ser det ut i Sverige? Vår television liknar ju allt mer den amerikanska.

Terrorattacken den 11 september var en verklig tragedi för USA. Därifrån har ett nytt hot framträtt som naturligtvis också måste tas på allvar. Hur skall medierna kunna hålla balansen mellan information och skräckpropaganda, mellan objektiv nyhetsförmedling och kränkt nationell stolthet?

Moore menar att media, multinationella företag och politiker har lyckats skrämma allmänheten så bra att de slutat fråga sig varför de är rädda. Diskutera och kritisera hans teorier. Marilyn Manson talar om konsumtion och rädsla i ömsesidig påverkan för att göra människor passiva. Är det något ni reflekterar över? Vem skulle ha intresse av att ungdomar inte ifrågasätter sin situation?


Fundera över varför just kulturella uttryck som rock- och hip hop-artister eller dataspel och filmer är så tacksamma måltavlor för moralisk bannlysning. Hur kommer det sig att man mer sällan söker svaren i politiken eller i samhällsstrukturen som ändå borde vara det som mest formar individens förutsättningar? Manson verkar vara en välformulerad person. Varför har media inte velat framhäva den bilden? Vem har intresse av att han framställs som demonisk, farlig och mystisk?


Ungdomar

Fundera över vikten av att som ung bli sedd av sina kamrater, lärare och andra vuxna. Ger de vuxna tillräckligt av sin tid för att lyssna på ungdomar? Har ni någon som lyssnar på er?

Att ta till våld är ett desperat försök att få uppmärksamhet. För DJ är det enda sättet att visa att han behärskar något och därigenom kan bli bekräftad. Negativ uppmärksamhet är bättre än ingen alls. Kan ni förstå att vissa unga människor tar till så drastiska metoder som mord för att överhuvudtaget märkas?

School Shootings

On Wikipedia a school shooting is defined as "an occurrence in which gun violence takes place at an educational institution. A school shooting involves a firearm being discharged at a school infrastructure, and may refer to incidents of shootings on a school bus or near school property while school is in session."

The Founding Fathers of the United States of America were political leaders and statesmen who participated in the American Revolution by signing the United States Declaration of Independence, taking part in the American Revolutionary War, and establishing the United States Constitution.

The Declaration of Independence


The Declaration of Independence is a statement adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, which announced that the 13 American colonies, then at war with Great Britain, regarded themselves as independent states, and no longer a part of the British Empire. Instead they formed a union that would become a new nation—the United States of America. 

The second sentence in the declaration is very famous.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Rockefeller center is a tall famous building in New York in the United States. Millions of tourists visit the Rockefeller Christmas Tree every year. Traditionally the tree is lit on the first Wednesday after Thanksgiving. This year that is Wednesday December 4th.

Famous athletes

Since you're working with presentations about athletes this week, I thought I would let you in on some of my favorite athletes. I would also like to give you some pointers on giving a speech!


Ice dancing

One of my favorite sports is ice dancing. This is my all-time favorite routine from this great French couple. They were always underdogs and most often beaten by a Russian couple, but I always thought they were the best. Just imagine doing this on skates!



I also like ice skating, but only men's skating. The women don't know how to jump, if you ask me... Here's my favorite male skater. Perhaps you recognize him from when Russia won the Eurovision Song Contest a few years ago; he was actually on stage in that number!

About 30 seconds into this clip you see him do a quadruple-tripple-tripple combination. For those of you who skate or snowboard,  that means he does a 1440 and then two 1080:s...
